If you are relocating to the UK from Nigeria, whether for work or study, one of the essential documents you’ll need to have is a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). This guide explains what a BRP is and how to get your BRP once you’re in the UK.

What is a BRP?

The BRP is a card issued to UK immigrants that confirms their identity, immigration status and the benefits they’re entitled to when in the UK.

How to get your  BRP:

Applying for a BRP is usually a part of the immigration application, so you don’t need to apply separately. You’re automatically entitled to it once you arrive in the UK if you’ve provided your biometric information and done any of the following:

  • You applied to live in the UK for over six months.

  • You’re extending your visa to longer than six months.

  • You applied to settle in the UK.

  • You’re transferring your visa to a new passport.

Also, the details of getting your BRP will be stated in your decision letter, and you must collect it within your first ten days in the UK  or before the vignette sticker on your visa expires.

If you run into any issues when collecting your BRP, you can report them here.

What details are on a BRP?

The BRP contains the following details:

  • Your name, place of birth, and date of birth.

  • Your immigration status and conditions of stay in the UK.

  • Your fingerprints and a photo of your face.

  • Information about whether you can access public funds and benefits.

Note: Some BRPs have a National Insurance Number printed on the back of the card. If your BRP doesn’t have a NIN, you’ll need to apply for one if you plan to work and claim benefits in the UK.

Read our guide on how to apply for a National Insurance Number.
