The UK has consistently had one of the world's most acclaimed and top-ranked education systems for a very long while. Every year, the number of people applying to study at the many prestigious universities in the UK increases.

There are undoubtedly tons of advantages to studying in the UK and bagging a qualification from a UK university, such as being exposed to a diverse cultural environment and having access to great job opportunities, among others.

If you are planning to study in the UK as well, this guide is for you. We broke down the process and requirements for getting a student visa to the UK from Nigeria.

Types of study visas to the UK

There are three types of visas for studying in the UK:

  1. Short-term study visa: This visa is issued to people who want to study an English language course in the UK for a period not longer than 11 months.

Criteria attached to short-term study visas:

  • You must have been accepted to study an English language course that doesn't last longer than 11 months at an accredited institution.

  • You must have enough money to support yourself without working.

  • You cannot change your course at any time while on this visa.

  • You cannot work (paid/unpaid) or carry out any business on this visa.

  • You cannot apply for most benefits involving public funds.

  • You cannot extend this visa.

Required documents to submit for a short-term study visa:

  • Your passport.

  • Proof of funds (usually your bank statement for the last six months)

  • A letter of acceptance from the institution you are planning to study at.

  • The details of where you plan to stay.

  • Evidence proving you have paid your course fees or have enough money to pay them.

Criteria attached to student visas:

  • You must have enough money to pay for your course and support yourself during your stay there.

  • You must have proof of knowledge of the English language.

  • You may be able to work. The exact amount of time you can work for mostly depends on the course you are studying.

  • You can extend a student visa.

  • After completing your course, you can switch from a student visa to a graduate visa.
